Good Morning all,

I have only just registered on the site, and have a request for a little bit of help.

My Sister-in-law is in a bit of a predicament. Her Husband has been collecting comics for quite a few years, and has boxes of them. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us, and she has no idea what the comics are worth, and she doesn't know at the moment whether to hold on to them for the kids, or sell them.

She has asked me if i can help get her some idea of the value, as she has been offered 10pence (0.10GBP) per comic, and is a bit suspicious.

She has gone through them all, and produced a list (approx 27pages), but hasn't been able to take any photos.

Is there anybody that would be willing to give the list a look, and give a realistic valuation, so that she can decide whether to keep them (and adjust the insuarance accordingly) or sell??????

All the comics are in pristine condition, the majority of them have been kept in plastic wallets.

The comics include Superboy, Batman, Superman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, The Flash, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, THe Sandman, Bloodlines etc etc etc

Thank you in anticipation

Dave

Hi,

Very sorry for your loss.

What dates are the comics?, im sure someone will come along soon too help you, (this is not my area of interest)

Ive just had a quick look in the 2007 Millars Collectable guide and found the following-

1989 Sandman comic - £10 - £15 each.

1967 Batman comic - £5 - £10

1961 comic number 1 - £650 - £750

hello again

thanks for the response. Greatly appreciated

The comics range from around 1979 up to 2000, although i don't have dates for all of them. I do have most of the issue numbers, and hopefully that will help.

laters

Hello Dave,

My husband has quite a large collection of similar comics and what I can tell you is that condition is everything.. the merest scrape, scratch, fold, crease etc... matters.  Mint is what people really want..otherwise many collectors view them as only fit for kids to read.

Another thing is that should the comic have had a freebie to the front of the comic - and it be missing, then that is a big drop in price too.  If they are old and rare then we are talking about different matters. Signed by the illustrator editions are naturally more worthy too.
Number 1's or 1-10 or sets of story series are of interest to collectors.  Are they English printed comics or American?

Prices for comics have dropped along with just about everything else in the recession, but it has (in my humble opinion) been a long time since they were sold for vast amounts of money.  (Although it does happen occasionally still and there ARE some people out there with money still!)  I remember once we sold a bulk load to a shop in Bournemouth, where we used to live and we made a packet.  We were young at the time and in deep shock.. it was pre recession (last time) in the boom years and its not been the same since.

By inputting the issue numbers, titles and dates into Google for a search, you should get some idea of what it might be worth and according to condition, moderate or accelerate the price you wish to list it at.

I hope this helps a little.

Love Michelle x

Hello Dave,

The vast majority of comics from this period are not worth very much unless they are in some way significant, i.e. they feature the first appearance of a particular character or have a particular storyline.  A lot of comics at this time were overprinted and there are therefore a lot of them about!  Most can be bought for 50p-£1 (or less!).  There are also a lot less comic collectors about now than there were twenty or thirty years ago and therefore there is a far smaller market for them.  If you like I will have a look at your list and see if there are any issues that may have any significant value.

James
