INSIDE STALIN'S GULAG
†by Kaz Zarod
(a Gulag survivor)
(Book - new hardback)
with foreword by Air Commodore E S Williams, CBE
Several books on Stalin's notorious Gulag prison camps and the appalling conditions and treatment of those unfortunate enough to have been imprisoned in them have been published. Probably the best known of these are those written by the great Alexander Solshenizyn and by Anne Applebaum. But there is a third outstanding book on this period which is much less well known. This book "Inside Stalin's Gulag" was written by the late Kazimierz Zarod, and it is absolutely vital reading for anyone interested in this dark period of European history.
"Inside Stalin's Gulag" was privately published after much encouragement by family and friends who felt, rightly, that his was an important story that should be told. As a result it is not widely known as less than 700 copies in total were printed. There was never any paperback edition nor is it at all likely that there will ever be a second print run.
The author was born in Warsaw, Poland, when it was under Tsarist (Russian) rule. He grew up in Siberia in Russia where his father was imprisoned for "subversive activities".† In 1939 Kaz Zarod was arrested by the Russians, whilst crossing into Rumania after the German invasion of Poland. This book is his eye-witness account of the cruel treatment he experienced and the atrocities he observed. When Germany invaded Russia he was released. As a result by 1942 he knew the Gulag system intimately and how lucky he was to survive it. Subsequently he came to England and served in the Polish Air Force Bomber Command and after the war transferred to the RAF where his linguistic skills were in demand. The book contains a foreword by Air Commodore E S Williams, CBE who was UK Defence Attache in Moscow from 1978-1981.
"Inside Stalin's Gulag" is an extremely rare book and secondhand copies, when they occasionally appear, are now beginning to command increasing prices. Fortunately the author's family had a very few NEW & UNSOLD copies left over from the sole print run.† Following the author's death, I have been asked by the family†to assist in the disposal of the very few remaining copies. I have sold most of the copies left mainly to the US as well as the UK, Poland and other countries, the most recent sale (January 2008) being to a US buyer here on Specialist Auctions.†
The book on offer now is from the very last batch. Although new all the few remaining copies have a few minor cosmetic faults due to long-term storage.†† The copy on offer in this sale has very minor browning of some page edges which is only visible when the book is closed.† Also the cover on very close examination has a few minor imperfections.† It has NOT been price-clipped.†† If you want this book I advise you purchase it now as I expect to run out of copies this year.† Not only is it a very good read, it is also a wise investment as it will be worth more than you paid for it!† (Have a look at the leading online bookseller and see what some sellers are asking for 2nd hand copies!)
